Electro-Mechanical Recertifiers recommends the following actions to minimize damage to your elevator during a hurricane or any storm where flooding is likely to occur:
- Take the elevator to the top floor and turn elevator off with door closed.
- Turn off mainline disconnect for elevator (located in elevator machine room).
- When storm passes, check elevator pit for flooding before returning elevator to service (if water in pit is less than six inches, then it is okay to turn the elevator back on).
- As a reminder for the Fall & Winter season, many elevator hatch doorsills freeze and jam frequently due to problems with ice and snow. It would be helpful if everyone would instruct their maintenance personnel to keep hallways and especially those near elevators, free of ice by using salt or antifreeze in the door tracks.
